Sigma K9 Detection & Training was built on a simple belief: dogs should be prepared for the real world—not just trained to perform in a training facility.

I'm the founder and head trainer of Sigma K9, and my approach to dog training comes from years of working with animals in environments where reliability, control, and clear communication aren't optional.

My background spans veterinary medicine, military animal care, explosive detection, and operational K9 work. Each of those experiences shaped the way I approach training today—and taught me that effective training isn't about forcing a dog to obey. It's about creating clear communication, building confidence, establishing structure, and teaching the dog how to make the right choices in the environments where those skills actually matter.

My career with animals began in veterinary medicine, where I gained a foundation in canine health, behavior, handling, and the physical factors that can affect a dog's ability to learn and perform.

That experience was followed by military animal-care work in Afghanistan, where the responsibilities surrounding working dogs were very different from those of a typical pet.

I later moved into explosive detection and operational K9 work, including assignments involving security operations in and around New York City. I've worked dogs in environments where distractions, unfamiliar surroundings, crowds, vehicles, noise, and changing conditions are part of the job.

Those experiences fundamentally changed the way I think about training.

A dog that performs perfectly in a controlled environment isn't necessarily a reliable dog.

The real test is what happens when the environment changes.

Sigma K9 isn't designed to be a high-volume dog-training operation.

I intentionally keep enrollment limited so that the dogs in my care receive meaningful individual attention and their training can be adapted as they progress.

That means training isn't simply a checklist of commands.

We work on the behaviors that matter to the dog's actual life:

• Reliable obedience
• Impulse control
• Calmness and neutrality
• Leash behavior
• Environmental confidence
• Appropriate social behavior
• Household structure
• Real-world distractions
• Off-leash reliability when appropriate
• Clear communication between dog and owner

When appropriate, training leaves the controlled environment and moves into the real world—because that's where reliability ultimately has to hold up.

A dog can learn a tremendous amount during a training program. But if the owner doesn't understand how to maintain those behaviors, the results won't last.

That's why I consider the transition back home to be one of the most important parts of the process.

My goal isn't simply to send a trained dog home.

It's to give the owner the knowledge, structure, and tools necessary to continue the work.

That philosophy is also why Sigma K9 provides ongoing support after training. I want clients to have somewhere to turn when a question comes up months or even years after the initial program.

I don't believe every dog needs the same program, and I don't believe every dog is a fit for Sigma K9.

Some dogs need a different type of professional intervention. Some owners need a different training environment. And sometimes the responsible answer is to refer a dog elsewhere.

That's intentional.

Keeping enrollment limited allows me to focus on the dogs and owners I can genuinely help rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

While Sigma K9 works extensively with companion dogs, the company's roots remain firmly connected to working-dog training and detection.

Sigma K9 also provides specialized scent-work and detection training, drawing on the same principles of odor recognition, environmental stability, handler communication, and reliable performance that are essential in working K9 environments.

The goal is always the same:

Build a dog that understands the job, understands the handler, and can perform when the environment isn't perfect.

I don't promise a magic fix.

I don't believe in shortcuts.

And I don't measure successful training by how impressive a dog looks during a five-minute demonstration.

I measure it by what happens when the owner takes the dog back into everyday life.

Can the dog listen when distracted?

Can the owner communicate clearly?

Can the dog settle?

Can the behavior hold up outside the training environment?

Can the relationship continue to improve after the program ends?

That's the standard I build Sigma K9 around.
